US 12 is a US Highway in the US state of North Dakota. The road forms an east-west route through the southwest of the state, through a remote area. The road runs in a southeasterly direction and does not pass through larger towns. The route is 141 kilometers long.

Near Marmarth, US 12 in Montana enters the state of North Dakota from Miles City at about 900 meters. This area consists of badlands, an eroded area with low cliffs. This part is part of the High Plains and offers endless views over the plains. Here is mainly some agriculture due to large ranches. In Bowman, US 85 crosses the road from Williston in the north to Belle Fourche in South Dakota. The area is gently sloping without forest. The road draws closer and closer to the South Dakota border and crosses it past Haynes, a hamlet. US 12 in South Dakota then continues toward Mobridge.

History

US 12 was created in 1926. The route in North Dakota has not been modified since. Since US 12 is of little importance to the state of North Dakota, the route has not been upgraded and has remained a single-lane road.
