Education in Mauritania is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 16. Primary school consists of six years, followed by three years of middle school and three years of upper secondary education. Most students are enrolled in Quranic schools, which are a traditional form of Islamic education focusing on the memorization of the Quran. These schools do not provide a comprehensive curriculum and thus most students also attend public or private secondary schools. The literacy rate in Mauritania is relatively low, with an adult literacy rate of 43%. To improve this, the government has implemented programs to increase access to education for girls and to make sure that all citizens have access to basic education. Additionally, the government has provided scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend higher levels of education. Check educationvv for Mauritania Education and Training.
