Education in Ireland is provided mainly by the public sector, with the state being responsible for the provision of free primary and secondary level education. The Irish education system is divided into four levels: primary, post-primary, further education and higher education. Primary school covers a child’s education from age 4 to 12 and consists of eight years of study. Post-primary schooling covers the period from age 12 to 18 and is divided into two distinct types: Junior Cycle (ages 12 to 15) and Senior Cycle (ages 15 to 18). Junior Cycle includes three years of study leading to an examination known as the Junior Certificate. Senior Cycle includes two years of study culminating in the Leaving Certificate Examination. Further Education offers a wide range of courses leading to qualifications such as certificates or diplomas, while Higher Education courses can lead to awards such as degrees or doctorates.
