Education in Greece is compulsory for children aged 6 to 15, and free for all students in public schools. The education system is divided into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary education lasts six years and covers the basic curriculum of mathematics, science, language arts, music and physical education. Secondary education consists of three years of lower secondary school (gymnasium) and three years of upper secondary school (lyceum). After completing the last year of lyceum, students have the option to pursue a Vocational Education Program or an Academic Lyceum Program which includes a variety of specializations such as law, engineering and medicine. Tertiary education includes undergraduate studies at universities or technical educational institutes. In recent years there has been an increase in international programs such as the Erasmus program which allows Greek students to study abroad for a semester or two.
