Education in Gabon is provided by both public and private institutions. Primary education is free and compulsory for children aged 6 to 11, and secondary education is available for those aged 12 to 18. Despite the fact that Gabon has a relatively high literacy rate (estimated at 87%), access to quality educational opportunities remains limited, particularly outside of the major cities. A lack of resources, qualified teachers, and adequate infrastructure all contribute to the challenges faced by the country’s education system. In an effort to improve educational outcomes, the government of Gabon has implemented a number of initiatives including teacher training programs, increased access to textbooks, and computer science courses. Additionally, there are several international organizations providing assistance in areas such as literacy and gender equality in education. As a result, there have been improvements in student performance on national exams and a greater emphasis placed on developing critical thinking skills.
