Equatorial Guinea

Education in Equatorial Guinea is a right granted to citizens by the constitution of the nation. Primary education is compulsory and free in the public school system, although attendance is low and only around half of all students complete primary school. Secondary education is not compulsory, but it is available and a growing number of students are attending. The country has two universities: the University of Equatorial Guinea and the Catholic University of Santa Maria de Nkogo. Both universities offer courses in a variety of fields, including business, engineering, medicine, science, law, and more. Despite this growth in higher education opportunities, illiteracy remains high in the country with an estimated 25% of adults unable to read or write. The government has been working to improve access to education for all citizens through initiatives such as increasing teacher training and expanding access to educational materials.
