Education in El Salvador is a priority for the government, and is free from pre-school to university level. The government also promotes adult education and technical training programs. Primary education in El Salvador consists of six years of study, followed by three years of secondary school. There are also private schools available that offer both primary and secondary education. University level education is offered through the University of El Salvador and several private universities. These universities offer a variety of degree programs in the fields of law, medicine, engineering, business administration, humanities and social sciences. In addition to these traditional academic programs, there are also vocational schools that provide training in specific trades such as carpentry or auto mechanics. Despite advances in education over recent decades, there remain significant challenges that hinder educational progress in El Salvador.
