Portland is the largest city in the US state of Maine. The city has 66,318 inhabitants. Portland was the capital of Maine from 1820 to 1832. Since then it has been the much smaller Augusta inland. Portland is known for its Old Port (Dutch: Oude Haven). This old neighborhood is full of brick warehouses. Many of these warehouses have been refurbished. They are now used as shops, restaurants, houses and offices. Not only the district, but also the harbor itself has been refurbished. For example , the harbor now houses a modern cruise terminal. The harbor is also still used for fishing. In the past, fishing was the main source of income for the city, but now offices are more important for the economy. There are many banks in the city. Besides a port, the city also has an airport: Portland International Jetport. From here there are flights to various cities on the American east coast. The city also has a small train station, from which a train runs to Boston. About 500 people use the station every day, quite a few compared to Europe. In America people do not like to use the train, they prefer to take the car. Public transport in the city itself is provided by buses.
