Maryland Area Codes

Maryland was one of 13 colonies that rebelled against British rule; the state was the scene of numerous battles. Maryland is also known by the name “Old Line State”, precisely in honor of its “line troops” and its nationalist spirit, praised several times by George Washington.

Washington DC, the capital of the United States, was founded out of land provided by the states of Maryland and Virginia. Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States, almost divides the state in half. Its climate is temperate, with milder temperatures in winter and a little warmer in summer, compared to other states in the region. This is due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The average temperature in Maryland is 27ºC in the summer and 1ºC in the winter.

The tertiary sector is responsible for 85% of the State’s GDP, with emphasis on community and personal services. Maryland’s financial, economic and cultural center is Baltimore, one of the country’s most important port hubs. The state capital is the city of Annapolis.

Baltimore-Washington Parkway

The highway leading through Maryland and connecting these two North American states is referred to as the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. The highway crosses many points of interest and connects the following cities: Washington DC, Bladensburg, Greenbelt, Laurel, Jessup, Linthicum, Lansdowne and Baltimore.

The highway opened in 1954 and stretches 29 miles through beautiful scenic countryside. The road is also known as 295. Along the freeway there are interesting locations such as Greenbelt Park, NASA Visitor Center, Greenbelt City Museum, Prince Georges Hospital Center and many others.
