Louisiana is one of the fifty American states. It is located in the southeastern region of the country, bordering the states of Arkansas in the north, Mississippi in the east, Texas in the west, and the Gulf of Mexico in the south. The state has the nickname “The Pelican State”, since this bird was very common on its coast.
Initially, Louisiana was a French colonial province, having passed into Spanish rule in 1763, and returned to French rule again in 1800. On October 31, 1803, the United States officially purchased Louisiana’s territory, elevating it to a state on April 30, 1812.

Mississippi, the second longest river in the United States, has a strong relationship with Louisiana, as the French discovered the region following the river’s path. Along with Florida, Louisiana is the state with the lowest average altitude in the USA: only 30 meters. Its climate is subtropical, with very hot summers (average of 29ºC) and mild winters (average of 13ºC).
Because of low trade taxes and the fact that their climate is slightly different from most of the country, many companies have been attracted to the state, resulting in one of the highest rates of economic growth in the United States. In general, its economy is quite diversified, with highlights for agriculture, livestock, trade, tourism and oil and natural gas exploration. Its largest city, New Orleans, became well known worldwide after the numerous damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
Lafayette
Lafayette is a city located on the Vermilion River in the US state of Louisiana. Around 260,000 people live in the entire metropolitan area, but only a little over 110,000 in the city itself. The Vermillion River running through the center of the city is one of Louisiana’s major waterways.
The town was founded by Frenchman Jean Mouton in 1821 as Vermilionville. In 1884, the city was renamed after a French military hero, General Lafayette, who fought on the side of the American army during the American Revolutionary War.
Until 1940, the city’s economy was mainly dependent on agriculture, but after that oil and natural gas extraction became dominant. Today, tourism also makes up a significant portion of the income – Lafayette is also an important center of Creole and Cajun culture. People come here mainly to taste the local Cajun cuisine, which is one of the most distinctive cuisines in the entire USA. Lafayette has thus gained a reputation as a city with the best restaurants that attract foodies from all over America.
In Lafayette, you will find many interesting places that are definitely worth a visit. There is, for example, the Acadiana Center for the Arts or the Acadian Village, where you can see collections from the Late Cambrian period, as well as the remains of the villages of the original inhabitants. Also interesting is the house with a museum of the first democratic governor of Louisiana, Alexandre Mouton House Museum.
