I-180 begins at the village of Hennepin as a continuation of State Route 71 and crosses the Illinois River. West of the river it intersects with State Route 29, which heads south to Peoria. Here, I-180 turns north and continues through an area of woods and meadows to a trumpet interchange with Interstate 80 at Princeton.

History

The highway was built to connect a steel mill in Hennepin to Interstate 80. The highway opened in 1969 and the steel mill closed that same year, making I-180 one of the most useless highways. Between 2002 and 2009 the factory was in use for some time, but has since been empty again.

Interstate 255 or I -255 is an Interstate Highway in the US states of Missouri and Illinois. The highway forms an eastern bypass of St. Louis. Although St. Louis is in Missouri, most of I-255 is located in Illinois. The route is 67 kilometers long.

Travel directions

In Mehlville, I-255 begins at a major interchange with I-55 and I-270. Interstate 55 runs from Memphis to St. Louis, and Interstate 270 forms the western and northern beltways of St. Louis. The highway is initially very wide, with 6+5 lanes. There are 2×3 lanes left when I-255 crosses the Mississippi River, also the state line with Illinois, via the Jefferson Barracks Bridge. At Columbia, the highway turns north, passing through a number of run-down and depleted suburbs on the Illinois side of the St. Louis metropolitan area.. The main suburb is East St. Louis, where the 2×3 lane highway runs along the east side. At Caseyville, one crosses Interstate 64, which runs from St. Louis to Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly afterwards, at Collinsville, one crosses the I-55 and I-70 which have a double numbering. Both highways come from St. Louis, and Interstate 55 runs to the state capital Springfield and Chicago, while Interstate 70 runs to Indianapolis. Not far after that, I-255 ends at Interstate 270, St. Louis’s northern beltway. Straight ahead is State Route 255, as a highway to the northern suburb of Alton. This route is 38 kilometers long.

History

On September 30, 1983, the first bridge over the Mississippi River opened at Mehlville, the second in 1992. In 1986, I-255 was completed. Unlike the western ring of St. Louis, the eastern ring hardly runs through any urbanized area. The highway only serves some loose suburbs.

In 2020, the East St. Louis section was renovated by closing the highway completely between I-70 and State Route 15 for 9 months. The closure began in February 2020 and was completed in November 2020.

Lane Configuration

With about 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles in 2×3 lanes, I-255 is considered a quiet highway with a lot of overcapacity.
