How to Photograph Fireworks with Any Camera

I’m a Carpenter, so I have no way to not associate with “new year’s Eve in Copacabana” and although always amaze me with the tranquillity of the party that always went well in all the years I never ventured to carry my DSLR to take pictures, so today’s tip for those who, like me, shooting the fireworks from both the “new year’s Eve in Copacabana” as other holidays with other types of cameras.

How to Photograph Fireworks with Any Camera

Photographing fireworks with a compact camera.

Technically, it’s pretty simple shooting fireworks with a compact camera, they typically have several scene modes and, of course, among them the “firework” or “Fireworks”.

The trick here is that the camera will stay with a low speed in order to capture the image and it is essential that it be upon-ple-ta-men-steady! That, you can’t move or your picture to get out that camera visorzinho interesting, but when you open on your computer … She will be blurry.

Ideally a tripod, but no one to go to a party with that huh? So it’s worth putting the camera on top of any surface, kneel, use the friend as support, hold your breath … but may not swing!

If your camera does not have the mode “Fireworks”, worth the “night” mode that will do the same thing, will disable the flash, increase the ISO and lower speed, IE, everything that makes a picture shaking, so keep it stable.

Another option is the landscape mode, which sets the focus at infinity, then cover the lens with your hand when you press the shutter button for the power outage encourages your camera to take a picture with a larger display.

Photographing fireworks using a DSLR

If you have an advanced compact camera or a DSLR, you can use manual exposure controls to obtain a result a little more creative.

First of all, if you are using a tripod and have a lens with VR (Nikon) or IS (Canon), i.e. that have off stabilizer because it makes the lens try to compensate for a vibe that doesn’t exist and may end up creating a.

Switch to the manual mode, if you don’t remember or have any questions, read the article “the dreaded M mode” to help you, in this mode you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed separately.

When you’re photographing light sources at night, the opening controls much of the brilliance of these lights, while the shutter speed determines how long the “trails” of lights will be in the picture. My suggestion is to start with an aperture f/8 and a 2 speed “(seconds), review your pictures on the LCD screen to get an idea where to follow. If you want Fireworks, open the aperture decreasing the number f. If the photo be overexposed (more to burst), increase the number f.

You can get great pictures of Fireworks with a wide range of settings, don’t be afraid to download the shutter speed too.

Photographing fireworks using a smartphone

Now, the inevitable question: you can get good pictures of Fireworks with a smartphone? Unfortunately, smartphones simply aren’t equipped to take pictures of fireworks. One limitation is your wide-angle lens inherently, other is your inability to control the aperture or shutter speed.

However, with an application as the Top Camera, which includes the ability to force your phone to use the shutter mode a bit slower, you can try to capture some fireworks. In doing so, remember your phone stabilized, because holding it in his hand, inevitably blurred results.

You may be taking pictures at night, but you’ll want to turn off the flash of the smartphone in this case. Not only to remove the unwanted light source just mentioned, but also reduce the shutter speed.

You can turn off the flash of your Iphone, for example, by touching the lighting button at the top. Make sure you select ‘ off ‘, and not ‘ auto ‘.

If possible, lock the focus of your smartphone, because the focus point can be erratic. If you are photographing a wide variety of fireworks the camera will focus on the biggest and brightest, which can take you to a miscalculation of the exhibition.

Another problem with the autofocus is late because the camera tries to find the best focal point and the value of the delay depends on the amount of motion and light in the sky, in this case the delay can be as long as you can lose your photos.

On the Iphone, for example, you can lock the focus and exposure by tapping and holding the center of your screen until the blue box to appear. (IOS 5 and needed.) When you remove your finger, you will notice a small message of ‘ AE/AF Lock ‘ on just above the camera shutter button.

Try not to move while shooting. In fact, good for any photo.

Tripod here can also be an option, and Alternatively, you can use a third-party camera application with a built-in timer which means you don’t need to press the shutter button. The problem with that, of course, is that it’s going to be almost impossible to set a timer to capture the fireworks at the right time, but it is an option.

Other tips

Once you get the hang of shooting fireworks, try setting the shutter speed to the setting “bulb”, if you have one. Bulb leaves the shutter open for as long as you press the shutter, and is a great way to make sure you capture exactly what you see in the sky, you control when the exhibition starts and stops. Be careful not to leave the shutter open for a long time, however, or you can get a mess overexposed. You can always review your last photo on the LCD screen to see how you’re doing. And of course the slower, more firmness, in the case of the bulb, an electronic trigger is welcome, or use the timer on the camera and do some tests.

If you control the focus of your camera, set it at infinity and leave it there. The fireworks will be probably too far, the ideal is to make the camera’s focus at infinity, so you’ll save time and frustration. In“Fireworks and Landscape modes” it is automatically adjusted for you, with a DSLR, you need to remember to set focus to infinity.

In addition, let the camera’s ISO on lowest setting, probably about 100, so that you can minimize the noise, which is worse than usual because of the long exposure times. Similarly, if your camera offers a noise reduction feature, it’s a good idea to turn it on.

Last but not least, look for a good location and enjoy your party!

Nice pictures and happy holidays in A2ZCAMERABLOG.
