From St. Petersburg to Phnom Penh you will have to fly with an additional transfer in Moscow, and then in Dubai or Bangkok: this option is offered by Emirates, Es Seven, Aeroflot and Bangkok Airways.

You can get a Cambodian visa right at the airport upon arrival, the procedure takes no more than 20 minutes.

You can also get to Phnom Penh by land transport: for example, there are direct buses from Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City (carriers (off. site) and Ibis (off. site)), travel time is 15 and 8 hours, respectively. Another option is to take a boat in Siem Reap and raft on Tonle Sap Lake, a 6-hour boat trip that will allow you to get to know some of the local attractions. But the water communication is blocked during the rainy season: from early September to early November.

From airport to city

There are several ways to get from the airport to the city, they differ in the level of comfort and fare. The most popular transport is tuk-tuk. The stop is located right next to the exit from the airport terminal, but some tourists try to catch it on the road in order to save money. Recently, tuk-tuks operate at fixed prices, you can bargain only in the low season. With a limited budget, it is better to take a regular bus (route 03), but you will have to look for its stop. It is not located in the terminal building, but on the highway. Buses run every half an hour from 5:00 to 20:30.

A taxi ride will cost 80,000 KHR, it is better to negotiate the cost in advance: there are no meters. Prices on the page are for December 2017.

Transport

Phnom Penh is a large Asian metropolis, but despite this, there is no metro, no trams, no city trains. Only regular buses running on key highways from 5:30 to 20:30. They are not popular among tourists due to severe congestion: there are almost always a lot of locals in the cabin, and even air conditioners do not save you from stuffiness.

Tuk-tuks and trishaws

Most travelers travel by tuk-tuks: good-natured drivers will deliver to any point of the city and are always ready to bargain. You can catch them on every street. In the historical part of the city, tourists are transported by cycle rickshaws. But they cannot be called full-fledged transport because of the low speed of movement. Rather, it is a local attraction that allows you to plunge into the life of medieval Asia.

Taxi and motorcycle taxi

With the development of tourism, the number of taxis on the streets of Phnom Penh is growing, but most drivers work independently, there is no single tariff scale.

The price of the trip depends on the season: in the high season you can get from the center to the outskirts for 20,000 KHR, in the low season – for 12,000 KHR. You need to agree on the price in advance.

To feel the local flavor, you can rent a motorcycle taxi. Traveling around the city will cost 4,000 KHR. But even here there are some nuances: most drivers do not speak English, you have to communicate with them with gestures. The passenger must be given a helmet, otherwise you can run into a fine.

Bike and bike rental

Tourists with category A driving license can rent a motorbike. It is most convenient to do this through the administrator at the hotel. This is a fairly popular transport option, but for some time you will have to get used to the chaotic movement and congested traffic.

People with a European appearance are often stopped by the police, and even if all traffic rules are observed, they have to be paid off.

If you don’t want to deal with the peculiarities of local driving, you can rent a bike (also through the administrator). You won’t have to deal with representatives of the authorities, but it’s better to travel only in the early morning: in the middle of the day, the climate is hardly tolerated by tourists.
