It was established in 1886 as a military fort for the US Army, and was named after Major General Thomas T. Duchesne, who served with distinction during the Civil War. The fort was meant to protect settlers from Ute Indians, who had inhabited the area for centuries prior to white settlement. This protection led to increased settlement in the region, which eventually led to the establishment of Fort Duchesne as a permanent settlement in 1905.

Today, Fort Duchesne is home to approximately 1,200 people and serves as an important economic center for the Uintah Basin region. The town has several businesses and services that serve local residents and visitors alike. These include restaurants, grocery stores, banks, hotels and motels, auto repair shops and gas stations. The town also has its own school district with two elementary schools and one high school.
