The town was founded in 1876 and originally called New Cairo. It was named after the city of Cairo, Egypt due to its location at the confluence of three rivers: the Potomac River, North Branch Potomac River, and Tonoloway Creek. The population of Cairo is currently around 1,000 people and it is known for its small-town charm and rural atmosphere.

The town has several historic buildings such as the Cairo House (built in 1873) which served as a hotel for many years, as well as several churches including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (built in 1878) which still stands today. Other points of interest include the historic railroad depot which was built in 1880 and served as a stop on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line until 1962 when it closed due to lack of passengers.
