History of Adell, Wisconsin
Adell, Wisconsin is a small village located in Sheboygan County and was first settled in 1846 by the brothers John and Jacob Adell. The Adells were German immigrants who had purchased land from the United States government and established a farming community. In 1853, the village was officially platted and named after the Adell brothers.
The village quickly grew with the construction of a post office, store, hotel, blacksmith shop and other businesses to support the small farming community. In 1868, Adell was incorporated as a village but didn’t become an official town until 1954.
In its early years, Adell was an agricultural-based economy supported by family farms that grew crops such as wheat, corn and oats. The village also had several cheese factories which helped to provide jobs for local residents. Over time, industrial businesses began to move into Adell which provided more employment opportunities for its citizens.
In 1889, one of the largest employers in town was established when Jacob Haeuser opened his brewery on Main Street. The brewery became known as Haeuser’s Brewery and provided work for many of Adell’s residents for nearly sixty years until it closed in 1949 due to prohibition laws that had been enacted during World War II.
As time went on, more businesses began to move into Adell which helped to diversify its economy even further. One of these businesses was a canning factory which opened in 1920 and provided canned fruits and vegetables to much of the Midwest region for nearly forty years until it closed in 1960 due to increased competition from larger food companies.
Today, Adell continues to be a small agricultural-based community with many family farms still operating throughout town. It is also home to several small businesses including restaurants, retail stores and auto repair shops which help support its citizens financially. The village also has two churches – St John’s Lutheran Church (established in 1854) and Trinity Lutheran Church (established in 1863).
Although times have changed since its establishment over 170 years ago, Adell continues to be an active farming community that provides employment opportunities for many of its citizens while preserving much of its original charm and character.
